The German Museum Folkwang in Essen presents two exhibitions about Africa. The photo exhibition "Africa, There and Back" and the poster exhibition "Africa - Reflections in Posters". Both exhibitions will run until Oktober 21, 2012

Under the title “Africa, there and back”, the photographic collection at Museum Folkwang is presenting works from its collection by Wolfgang Weber, Germaine Krull, Robert Lebeck, Rolf Gillhausen, Malick Sidibé and Pieter Hugo. The exhibition focuses on the treatment of the political and cultural balance of power in the photographic medium. The timeframe spans some 80 years and stretches from the colonial era to today’s global capitalism.

Of the interesting photographers of the exhibit is Malick Sidibé. During the first decade after independence, Sidibé, who comes from and lives in Mali, chronicled the euphoric mood in his home country and produced portraits of the confident youth of Bamako. The images and style of Malick Sidibé were used in the Janet Jackson video “Got till it’s gone”.

The German Poster Museum cast a glance at the way in which Africa is portrayed in public posters. The exhibition concentrates on three elements, namely the colonial, anti-colonial and African perspective.

Museum Folkwang plans to honour the theme of the exhibition and to show Africa, There and Back in Sub-Saharan Africa, the very first time the museum will present an exhibition in an African country. Following Essen, the first stop of the exhibit is supposed to be Lagos, Nigeria.
